LGUSD Multilingualism Board Resolution
The Los Gatos Board of Trustees passed the following resolution in June 2021 supporting multilingualism in LGUSD and Lexington's "Pathway to Multiliteracy" initiative.
LGUSD BOARD RESOLUTION # 07-20-21
SUPPORTING HOME LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT FOR ALL STUDENTS
WHEREAS, the Los Gatos Union School District is committed to supporting multilingualism as a fundamental part of increasing intercultural understanding and international-mindedness;
WHEREAS, the LGUSD is committed to extending access to an education for students from a variety of cultural and linguistic backgrounds;
WHEREAS, the LGUSD believes in the importance of bringing awareness of and appreciation for home languages within the LGUSD community;
WHEREAS, the LGUSD believes a strong foundation in the home language facilitates the learning of a second language;
WHEREAS, the LGUSD believes children who see their home language valued build a positive and healthy self-identity and stronger sense of pride in their cultural and linguistic heritage;
WHEREAS, the LGUSD recognizes and celebrates minority languages as being equally as important as the dominant language;
WHEREAS, the LGUSD values multilingualism because it fosters a welcoming school environment of inclusivity and diversity;
WHEREAS, the LGUSD believes there is a growing need for individuals who are proficient in two or more languages in today's world economy and socio-political climate;
WHEREAS, the LGUSD is committed to supporting its Strategic Plan goals to foster international mindedness, explore world languages TK-5, and educate students for global citizenship;
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that, to meet the LGUSD’s beliefs and commitments, the District will implement the following action:
- Recognize and support Lexington Elementary School’s “Pathway to Multiliteracy” initiative to encourage students to learn multiple languages and eventually pursue the Seal of Biliteracy Certificate in high school;
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of Trustees of the Los Gatos Union School District, Los Gatos, California at a public meeting thereof duly called and held on June 8, 2021.
