International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program
***If you would like to learn specifically about our unique Transitional Kindergarten (TK) IB Early Years Program at Lexington, visit this webpage.
Lexington Elementary was authorized to deliver the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (PYP) in 2007, the first public school in northern California.
At the heart of the Primary Years Program (and all IB programs..the Middle Years Program and Diploma Program) is a commitment to developing students as global citizens. Lexington students, staff, and families are encouraged to demonstrate the ten attributes of the IB Learner Profile. These attributes are integrated throughout the curriculum and culture of our school. To learn more about the IB Learner Profile, click HERE.
Guided inquiry is the vehicle and framework for learning. Units of inquiry are organized under six transdisciplinary themes:
- Who We Are
- Where We Are in Place and Time
- How We Express Ourselves
- How We Organize Ourselves
- How the World Works
- Sharing the Planet
Teachers and students pose key questions that are concept-based to structure their units of inquiry. Students acquire and apply transdisciplinary skills while developing an understanding of these important concepts. The PYP aims to synthesize the best research and practice from a range of national systems to create a relevant, engaging, and challenging curriculum. Working to develop the attitudes and attributes of the IB learner profile are essential to developing internationally minded people who will make a difference in our world. As a California public school, Lexington teachers also integrate district and California Common Core State Standards.
